Most of us have a complicated relationship with our homes. We tidy up before guests arrive. We notice the pile of papers on the counter when we’re already running late. We plan to declutter, genuinely and often, but the week fills up again before we start. We adapt to the things that feel slightly off: the dim lighting, the stuffy corner room, the drawer we’ve been meaning to sort since last spring.

Most of us have a complicated relationship with money. We mean to build a cushion. We tell ourselves we'll really start saving once the raise comes through, once the last credit card is paid off, once things settle down enough to breathe. Meanwhile, the paycheck arrives and leaves again, mostly absorbed by whatever felt urgent that week: the bill due today, the appointment that couldn't wait, the small emergency that always seems to land right before payday. None of it feels like a decision. It just adds up.

Most of us have been taught to pay attention to our mental health only when something goes wrong. When the anxiety becomes hard to ignore. When the exhaustion doesn't lift after a weekend of rest. When one difficult week bleeds into two, then three, and suddenly you're wondering how you got here. We wait. We push through. We tell ourselves we're fine until we're not.

We mean to exercise. We tell ourselves we'll start Monday, once the schedule calms down, once we've bought the right shoes or found the right class.

We mean to call. We tell ourselves we'll catch up “soon,” and soon quietly turns into a season, then a year. We're not avoiding anyone. We're just busy, and the people who matter most usually ask for the least, so they're the easiest to postpone.
