Faith as a Compass: Reconnecting with What Anchors You

There are moments when everything feels aligned—career thriving, relationships stable, health intact. We stand in that space of fulfillment, believing nothing could shake this equilibrium.

When Everything Falls Apart

There are moments when everything feels aligned—career thriving, relationships stable, health intact. We stand in that space of fulfillment, believing nothing could shake this equilibrium. We credit ourselves: our effort, our abilities, our planning. We trust in our capacity to keep everything going.

But life has a way of humbling us.

In a single second, that picture can shatter. An accident. A diagnosis. Betrayal. A career mistake. Sometimes it’s not even catastrophic—a simple misstep cascades into chaos we never saw coming. When this happens, we’re forced to confront: What happens when we lose trust in ourselves and in life itself?

I've learned something profound: every time my trust pointed solely toward myself, something eventually broke it—or at least questioned it deeply.

The Weight of Uncertainty

Life has presented me with uncertainty, disbelief, and disappointment. But the weight feels exponentially heavier when people you love depend on you, when they look to you as their connection to strength beyond human understanding.

Growing up near a region shadowed by conflict near the border taught me about navigating fear in ways I never anticipated. When I first heard the news in 2022, my heart broke for those suffering. I felt utterly incapable of doing anything real to help. The helplessness was overwhelming.

In that powerlessness, I found myself lifting my concerns to God—Who I knew possessed the strength I couldn't find anywhere else. For that moment after surrendering my worries, I found relief and hope.

But the feelings kept returning. Then came deeper thoughts: What if this extends over the border? What if my family faces such scenes? The land where I grew up, the place I long to return to unchanged—what if violence transforms it?

These thoughts consumed me. Sleepless nights became my norm. My only hope was bringing my fears to the Lord—the One able not only to comfort me but to restore peace and support those suffering so deeply.

The Shift: From Control to Surrender

I connected to the One who sees the bigger picture when I can only see fragments.

Did that change my feelings instantly? Did it stop the unwanted events? No.

But it changed the way I moved through that fear and anxiety.

I realized I wasn't alone in carrying this burden. With faith grounded in God's strength rather than my own, I could offer genuine hope to others. I was transformed by a humbling truth: even when we think we're in control, we're just one second away from losing it.

Faith became my anchor not because it fixed everything, but because it reminded me I wasn't meant to carry everything alone.

Faith as a Journey, Not a Destination

Through these tough times, I learned that faith is not a destination but a journey. It's a way to express our smallness, our gratitude, and our dependence on the One who holds everything together.

Faith as a compass doesn't promise we'll never get lost. It doesn't guarantee smooth seas. What it offers is direction when everything feels uncertain—an anchor when the storms come.

The God who created us was there at our beginning, walks with us through our present, and won't abandon us at the end. Surrendering our worries and offering our gratitude shifts the burden from our limited shoulders to the infinite strength of the One who never grows weary.

Finding Your Anchor: Practical Steps Forward

If you're feeling unmoored right now, here's how to reconnect with what anchors you:

START WITH HONESTY

Acknowledge where you've been trying to control everything. Name the fear, the anxiety, the uncertainty you're carrying. You don't have to have it all together.

SURRENDER DAILY

Make it a practice—morning or night—to consciously release your worries to God. Prayer doesn't have to be elaborate. Simply speak what's on your heart and trust Him with it.

LOOK FOR HIS PRESENCE IN THE PRESENT

When everything feels chaotic, ground yourself in this moment. Where do you see evidence of God's faithfulness? In relationships that sustain you? In strength you didn't know you had? In provisions that came just when you needed them?

CONNECT WITH OTHERS WALKING THE SAME PATH

Faith isn't meant to be solitary. Find people who remind you that you're not alone—whether that's a faith community, a trusted friend, or a mentor who's weathered their own storms.

Remember: faith transforms the journey, not just the destination. You're not seeking faith so that life becomes easy. You're cultivating faith so that when life gets hard, you know where your strength comes from.

Reflect: What Anchors You When Everything Feels Uncertain?

Take a moment today: What grounds you when life shakes your foundation? Is it faith in God? Trust in the resilience of the human spirit? Connection to loved ones?

Whatever your anchor may be, reconnect with it. Not as a fix for your problems, but as a guide through them.

We're not meant to carry everything alone. We're not meant to have all the answers. Sometimes the greatest strength is found in surrendering control and trusting in the God who promises to never leave us nor forsake us.

Because faith isn't about having all the answers—it's about trusting in the One who does, even when the path isn't clear.
